Sit down in row 11 of an Airbus A220-300 and look out the window. Go on, really look. The window is enormous — noticeably, almost absurdly large compared to what you’d expect on a single-aisle narrowbody. You can see the whole engine. You can see the curve of the wing. On a clear day over the Rockies, you feel less like a passenger and more like an observer pressed up against the glass of something genuinely beautiful. That’s not an accident, and it’s not a marketing gimmick. It’s a clue to what makes the A220 one of the most thoughtful aircraft flying today.
The A220 started life as the Bombardier CSeries — a Canadian clean-sheet design conceived in the 2000s to fill a gap the majors had largely ignored: the 100-to-150-seat regional market. Bombardier built it from the ground up rather than stretching an existing platform, and that matters enormously. When you aren’t constrained by a legacy fuselage cross-section, you can make choices purely on merit. So the fuselage is wider than any competitor in its class. Wide enough, in fact, to give you a genuine 2-3 seat configuration with none of the cramped misery that word “regional” usually implies.
Those windows are a direct result of that approach. Because the fuselage sits where it sits, and the floor is positioned where it is, the windows align beautifully with seated eye level. No awkward craning. No choosing between leaning forward or backward to find a view. You just look out, and there’s the world. It sounds like a small thing until you’ve spent three hours on a different narrowbody squinting through an oval porthole positioned somewhere around your shoulder blade.
But the window story is really just the entry point into a deeper truth about the A220: almost everything about the cabin was reconsidered from scratch. The overhead bins are large enough to actually fit modern carry-ons — a sentence that should not need to be written about a new aircraft, yet here we are. The aisle is wide. The ceiling feels tall. Passengers on A220 routes consistently report that it feels like a bigger aircraft than it is, and that’s not an illusion. The cabin volume genuinely supports it.
Under the skin, the engineering is just as interesting. The A220 uses Pratt & Whitney’s geared turbofan engines, the PW1500G series, which pair a reduction gearbox between the fan and the low-pressure compressor stages. The fan can spin at its optimal speed while the compressor spins at its own optimal speed, and the efficiency gains are substantial. Combined with a significant proportion of composite materials in the airframe, the result is an aircraft that can serve thinner routes economically — routes that widebody logic would never touch, and that older narrowbodies would serve at a loss.
That’s where the airline story gets compelling. The A220 opened up city pairs that previously couldn’t sustain regular jet service. Carriers began connecting mid-size markets directly rather than funneling passengers through hubs, which sounds like a dry operational fact but translates into something real for passengers: fewer connections, less time in airports, more direct routes between cities that actually want to talk to each other.
Airbus took over the program in 2018 after Bombardier’s financial difficulties made a partnership necessary, and production has been steadily expanding since. The aircraft has found operators across multiple continents, and the orderbook remains healthy. Airlines that fly it tend to like it. Passengers who notice these things tend to love it.
The A220 didn’t reinvent aviation. It did something arguably harder: it took the unglamorous short-to-medium-haul sector and made it worth looking forward to. Next time you’re booked on one, grab that window seat. You’ve earned the view.
